This year’s competition attracted more than 1,000 entries from over 100 higher education institutions across Asia, making the competition highly competitive. The students’ outstanding achievement reflects their excellence in photojournalism, storytelling, and international perspectives.

The Department would also like to express its sincere gratitude to the Hong Kong Journalism Education Foundation for supporting the students’ field trip to Malaysia, which made this reporting project possible.

The programme featured simulated real-world interviews and reporting exercises, challenging students to work under pressure and capture compelling stories on the ground. Expert-led masterclasses offered in-depth insights into the roles journalists and relief workers play during humanitarian crises, emphasizing the importance of communication and collaboration.

Over the course of the week, 150 students from around the world formed teams to produce news packages and compete for three reporting awards. We are proud to share that our student Zheng Jianyu and his team earned a Merit Award, while Tan Haiyan, Xiang Lizhi, and Mahzaib Abbasi won prizes in the 60-second individual video challenge.

Students described the experience as highly valuable—not only for strengthening their interviewing and reporting skills, but also for expanding their global perspectives and networks through cross-cultural exchange. Beyond the classroom, participants explored local attractions and immersed themselves in Abu Dhabi’s vibrant culture.

The week-long training camp (10-17 December 2024) kicked off with a grand welcome dinner where 140 participants from 20 countries around the world gathered at the Hilton Hotel. During the conference dinner, several guests were invited to explain the application of AI in various fields, giving participants the opportunity to network and exchange ideas.

In the following days of master classes, Jonathan Hawkins, CNN’s Vice President of Communications, explained the use and policies of AI at CNN. Adam Dunnakey, a CNN TV news producer with expertise in AI, demonstrated how AI-synthesised images and videos can now be almost indistinguishable from the real ones. He also suggested ways of distinguishing the real from the fake. This session was particularly engaging for the students, who expressed that it broadened their horizons. Becky Anderson, a renowned CNN anchor and Managing Editor in Abu Dhabi, also hosted a panel discussion with an AI scholar.

In addition to lectures, the academy arranged a series of simulated interviews to help students understand the importance of being wary of false information and verifying facts at a time when it is often difficult to discern the authenticity of information. Twenty-six groups of students produced news videos based on their interviews and competed for four awards. Two of our students, working with foreign team members, won a special achievement award. A group of our students also received a special commendation for ‘checking in’ at designated Abu Dhabi locations and creating visual stories to post on a selected social media platform. The judges praised the students’ photos and descriptions.

Our students expressed that they gained a lot from this study tour. Not only did they get to meet students from different countries, but they also gained a deeper understanding of the application of AI in the media and the challenges of news production, significantly enhancing their professional journalism skills.

This tour was accompanied by Dr. Tracy Lee, Head of Department, Mr Felix Poon, Associate Professor of Practice, and Ms Carol Yiu, Senior Lecturer of the Journalism and Communication Department.

During the seven days, students got a rare opportunity to visit the venue of the COP28 Climate Conference in Dubai and attend a press conference. COP28 was the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

This study tour was an intensive learning experience for our students. Students were divided into small groups with foreign students to participate in a newsroom simulation competition. They took part in various news coverage, for example, going to Mangrove National Park to learn more about how climate impacts affect human lives through air pollution and extreme weather events.

In addition, students attended different types of workshops, such as one of the masterclasses chaired by Becky Anderson, Managing Editor of CNN Abu Dhabi and Anchor of Connect the World. They were also very fascinated by the AI workshop, and it was learned that AI was also a double-edged sword in media.

The last day was the award presentation ceremony. Five of our students from three groups won Special Recognition Awards and Honourable Mention Awards for their news videos.

Most students agreed that this trip was a wonderful out-of-the-classroom learning experience and allowed them to grow rapidly in terms of journalistic professionalism.

The tour was led by Mr Felix Poon, Associate Professor of Practice; Dr Olivine Lo, Assistant Professor; and Ms Carol Yiu, Lecturer of the Journalism and Communication Department.
