MAGC Students Earn a Fruitful Experience in CNN Study Tour

Tue, 02 Jan 2024 08:56:16 +0000

44 students of the Master of Arts in Global Communication program under the Journalism and Communication Department, joined the one-week (from 3 December to 9 December 2023) Bootcamp being held at CNN Academy in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

During the seven days, students got a rare opportunity to visit the venue of the COP28 Climate Conference in Dubai and attend a press conference. COP28 was the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

This study tour was an intensive learning experience for our students. Students were divided into small groups with foreign students to participate in a newsroom simulation competition. They took part in various news coverage, for example, going to Mangrove National Park to learn more about how climate impacts affect human lives through air pollution and extreme weather events.

In addition, students attended different types of workshops, such as one of the masterclasses chaired by Becky Anderson, Managing Editor of CNN Abu Dhabi and Anchor of Connect the World. They were also very fascinated by the AI workshop, and it was learned that AI was also a double-edged sword in media.

The last day was the award presentation ceremony. Five of our students from three groups won Special Recognition Awards and Honourable Mention Awards for their news videos.

Most students agreed that this trip was a wonderful out-of-the-classroom learning experience and allowed them to grow rapidly in terms of journalistic professionalism.

The tour was led by Mr Felix Poon, Associate Professor of Practice; Dr Olivine Lo, Assistant Professor; and Ms Carol Yiu, Lecturer of the Journalism and Communication Department.

HKCHC students attended a COP 28 press conference in Dubai on Dec 3.

The simulation week began with a news conference. Our students were shooting the event as journalists.

Five award winners: Yang He, Haoyi Huang, Jiaxin Li, Xuejiao Dong and Baoyi Ou (from left to right).

“They made it!” A group photo was taken with their certificates!

A group photo was taken with three instructors after the award presentation ceremony.
