Journalism Department Hosts AI Workshop to Boost Greater Bay Area Academic and Cultural Exchange

From 5 to 8 August, the Department of Journalism and Communication at Hong Kong Chu Hai College, in partnership with Guangdong University of Finance and Economics (GDUFE), held the “Artificial Intelligence Communication Technology and New Media Development” academic exchange workshop. The programme aimed to sharpen participants’ media skills and foster a deeper appreciation of Hong Kong’s media landscape, while promoting cross-regional academic and cultural ties within the Greater Bay Area.

The opening and closing ceremonies were graced by academic leaders from both universities, including Professor Robert Li (Associate Vice-President for Academic & Research, HKCHC), Professor Fung Kam-wing (Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, HKCHC), Dr. Tracy Lee (Head of the Department of Journalism and Communication, HKCHC), Professor Ben Ting (Programme Director of Criminology and Criminal Justice, HKCHC), Professor Tong Wenxia (Associate Dean, GDUFE), and Dr. Chen Xiaoxi (Party Branch Secretary, GDUFE).

        The workshop offered hands-on training in television production, digital media applications, and the integration of AI with new media. A distinctive feature was the exploration of media’s relationship with criminology and criminal justice, where students used immersive AI technologies for crime-scene investigation simulation and gained practical experience in writing and editing crime and court news.

Guest speakers included Mr. Jacky Chu and Mr. Stephen Ma, Vice Presidents of the Hong Kong Film Post-Production Professionals Association, and Mr. Ng Ngai-ho, an alumnus of HKCHC and a current television news anchor, who shared practical insights on AI applications and the evolving media landscape.

Looking ahead, Professor Robert Li and Professor Tong Wenxia agreed to deepen collaboration between the two institutions, fostering continued academic and cultural exchange in the future.
