JCC short film to screen in Bangkok Asean Film Festival

‘No Panic’, a short film produced and directed by the teachers of Communication and Crossmedia programme (JCC)， will be screening in Bangkok Asean Film Festival (BAFF) on 13 Dec.

The film was screenplayed and produced by Mr Leung Tak Man, JCC Programme Leader, and directed by Mr Ho Fung, an adjunct lecturer of the programme. It is one the three short films of BAFF’s Omnibus Feature Film Project, which is a collaborative project launched first time in 2021 that encourages more regional exchange with the support of ACBS (Asia Content Business Summit) beyond the pandemic.

It is a story about a single-parent family during the Covid-19 epidemic. The father is a medical staff who works long hours away from home. The daughter is obsessed with cleanliness and against her father to voluntarily work on the frontline. The daughter’s unkempt grandpa suddenly drops by and stays at their home. A ‘panic war’ is triggered among the kin…

JCC Students master music skills from live performance

The JCC students made practice performing at the college’s multi-purpose studio to sharpen their music performance and stage management skills.

Students of the Communication and Crossmedia programme (JCC) rolled up their sleeves to set up audio and music equipment on the stage, comprehending how the stagehands and audio engineers collaborate with the musicians in live performance.

Mr Tonyi Ng, the lecturer in Music Engineering, and Mr Sing Hui, Studio Supervisor of the communication department, taught students how the positions of musical instruments and audio equipment will affect the stage sound quality and how to use sound effects in an acoustic environment.

Performance, at its heart, is an act of beauty, kindness, and generosity. JCC students commit themselves to crossmedia communication and help contribute to the society.

DSE students can apply Year 1 admission through JUPAS (JUPAS Code: JSSC04), while Associate Degree and Higher diploma graduates can gain direct admission to Year 3 entry of our programme.

‘Superman’ de-structures 5 pitfalls of microfilming

Mr Lam Chiu Wing, nicknamed ‘Superman’, gave a lecture to JCC students on how to produce a microfilm.

The former chairman of Hong Kong Screenwriters’ Guide explained to the students of Communication and Crossmedia （JCC, JUPUS Code: JSSC04）programme there were five pitfalls including redundant scenes, lack of emotional depth, lengthy dialogues, predictability and lack of shots, and insufficient shot coverage.

Lam said scenes should advance the plot and develop the characters, but too many scenes in a 10-minute microfilm will result to chaos. As a microfilm director, he or she should be a ‘poet’ who can express emotional depth of the film through scenes and shots.

One of the common mistakes of microfilm is that the director tries to let the characters tell the story instead. The dialogue is lengthy and it results to lack of camera moving and dull scenes, he explained.

A microfilm should have suspense to arouse viewers interest. The director should create some suspensive scenes to run the plot.

The most common mistake of a rookie microfilm director is insufficient shot coverage. Mr Lam further elaborated that an inexperienced director tends to have many long takes but inclines to take some empty shots and cutaways. As a result, after cutting out long takes, there are not enough shots to advance the story.

Mr Lam Chiu Wing, former Chairman of Hong Kong Screewriters’ Guild, is renowned for his versatility in acting and directing. His Scriptwriting works include Vulgaria, The Treasure Hunter, Kung Fu Dunk etc..

JCC Teacher and Students produce MR animation – Fight of Nuncha

JCC (JUPUS Code: JSSC04) Lecturer Mr Carlos Hui led students Zou Jingze and co. to produce a Marvel-like Mixed Reality animation.

The Fight of Nuncha is set in the future of Hong Kong where A.I. controls everything. However, A superhuman fights for his own fate after incarnation from the old Hong Kong, instead of crawling back to AI robots who occupy the land and almost eradicate all residents.

The time traveller, who inherits martial art skills from secluded kung-fu masters in the old Hong Kong where AI is not existing, takes on the robot warrior. It is the time when tradition meets the future…

In order to build up a Mixed Reality scene, the animation employs 3D motion capture technology to record fighting movements performed by a kung-fu master Mr Lau Man Leung, and then animates the actions in a futuristic setting by using chroma keying, 3ds Max modelling, positional tracking, after effects, etc.

“Between ideal and reality, falls the animation. MR technology has come a long way,” Mr Carlos Hui puts it.

The Communication and Crossmedia Programme (JCC), a SSSDP programme (JUPAS Code JSSC04), aims to train students with all creative-media skills and put emphasis on film, multimedia and digital production techniques. Students are able to integrate their all-round production skills and creativity into multi-platform publishing and presentation.

Music Master shares with JCC students his pilgrimage of film scoring

Tsui Chin Hung, one of the new generation of musicians in Hong Kong, shared his spiritual journey of music composing and film scoring with students of Communication and Crossmedia (JCC) Programme.

He demonstrated some muted footages to explain how music scores can harmonize, develop and extend the story arc. Tsui said that film scoring, just like directing and editing，the musician should know how the music connects with the story. Take the film “Coffin Home” that he scored for example, as the film is a black humorous ghost story, the music score for a ghost scene should be spooky with a humorous variation.

“At the end of the film, all neighbours of a small flat in a dilapidated tenement rush to the haunted mansion. It can be a march accompanied with an undertone of irony to recall the theme of the film,” he further elaborated.

Tsui told JCC students the way to creativity is long and lonely, and a musician tends to listen to his or her own voice. “But we must open our ‘third eye’ to look into us and our works so that we will not go astray or get into a dead end.”

Tsui Chin Hung has composed music for renowned troupes, chambers, and ballets in Hong Kong and overseas. He also composed film scores for “Ciao UFO”, “Golden Boy” and “Coffin Home”.

TV Make-up Workshop for JCM students

On September 30, 2021, students enrolling for the course of News Anchoring & Programme Hosting were given a special session to learn how to apply make-up on their faces before appearing on screen in the TV Make-up Workshop organized by the Department of Journalism and Communication. The coach is Ms. Deborah Wong, an alumnus of Chu Hai College of Higher Education, and also the widow of the late renowned Film and TV Make-up artiste Mr. Chan Man Fai.

Chu Hai holds bootcamp for its journalism students

A Bootcamp is being held by the Hong Kong Bureau of CNN at the campus of Chu Hai College of Higher Education (CHCHE) in Tuen Mun for the students of journalism and communication from June 7 to June 11, 2021.

Professor Chiu-kay Tang, Vice President (Academic) of CHCHE, and Mr. Roger Clark, VP and Bureau Chief of CNN Hong Kong, both officiated at the Opening Ceremony of the Bootcamp on Monday, June 7, 2021.

Mr. Roger Clark later delivered a talk to the students and the faculty staff of the Department of Journalism and Communication, CHCHE, on his own passion for the television journalism career and the role of CNN’s Hong Kong Bureau. He also talked about the challenges of covering regional news events in Asia amid the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Because of the current Pandemic, this Bootcamp is being held in a mixed mode of face-to-face, mainly for local students, and Zoom, for those students who could not come to Hong Kong due to COVID-19.

This bootcamp is part of the Master of Arts in Global Communication programme, which was launched by CHCHE’s Department of Journalism and Communication in September 2020. The Bootcamp was supposed to be held at the Headquarters of CNN in Atlanta, Georgia, USA as the concluding course of the whole Programme. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, both CNN and CHCHE were forced to change the venue of the Bootcamp to Hong Kong.

During the week-long event, the students has been given a tour to CNN’s newsroom and studio in Wong Chuk Hang on Hong Kong Island on the second day. They will also be briefed on CNN’s news setup in the Asian Region, the daily operations of newsgathering, digital operations in Hong Kong, news and features production, etc. The camp will be wrapped up with a talk on CNN anchoring and reporting by CNN’s anchor Anna Coren on the last day, Friday, 11 June, 2021.

The Master of Arts in Global Communication programme was the first in a series of Master’s programmes to be launched by the Department of Journalism and Communication, Chu Hai College of Higher Education (CHCHE). It is an interdisciplinary programme focusing on the global aspects of communication in the new media era. It is currently taking in application for admission from local and Mainland applicants for the coming academic year of 2021-22.
