The Department of Journalism and Communication held a special academic symposium on “True or False in AI Creation?”
The Department of Journalism and Communication held a thematic academic seminar titled “AI Creation: Truth or Fiction?” as part of the Master’s program in Art and Creative Technology and Digital Communication. The event was a great success, with several distinguished speakers invited, including Dr. Ma Ka Fai, a Hong Kong writer, Ms. Yolanda Ng , Board Member of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, and Ms. Joel Kwong, an international new media art curator.
Professor Fung Kam Wing, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, was unable to attend in person due to official commitments but took time out of his busy schedule to record a welcome video. In his speech, he congratulated the organisers on the success of the event. He emphasised that this seminar was not only a valuable attempt, but also a beneficial exploration of how AI can be applied in the field of language and creative writing. Dr Tracy Lee, Head of the Department of Journalism and Communication at Hong Kong Chu Hai College, presented souvenirs to the guest speakers.
During the guest speaker session, Dr Ma Ka Fai, a Hong Kong writer, shared his views on AI tools with humour and depth. He pointed out that it is difficult for AI to replace human depth and authenticity in literary and artistic creation. Ms Yolanda Ng, a board member of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, remarked that while AI can offer tools and direction, the ultimate depth and emotional impact of creations still come from human hands and hearts. Ms. Joel Kwong, an international curator of new media art, shared her rich experience in media art curating and highlighted the importance of integration of art and technology, as well as the potential and challenges of AI in artistic creation and curation. Mr So Wing Kuen, Director of the Master’s Programme in Art and Creative Technology and Digital Communication, delivered the closing remarks, emphasising the duality of AI as a tool and the irreplaceability of human emotional experience.
The participants were actively involved and eagerly participated in the Q&A session, asking questions such as whether humanity should be concerned about AI development getting out of control and how AI would affect literary creation. After the seminar, students excitedly approached the speakers to ask follow-up questions, take pictures with them and ask for autographs. This seminar not only provided students with a deeper insight into AI creation, but also offered valuable opportunities to expand their knowledge in the field of AI.
