CNN Study Tour: Reporting on Humanitarian Crises

Forty-four students from the MA in Global Communication programme recently took part in an immersive news experience at CNN Academy in Abu Dhabi from November 17 to 22, where this year’s theme was “Reporting on Global Health Issues.”

The programme featured simulated real-world interviews and reporting exercises, challenging students to work under pressure and capture compelling stories on the ground. Expert-led masterclasses offered in-depth insights into the roles journalists and relief workers play during humanitarian crises, emphasizing the importance of communication and collaboration.

Over the course of the week, 150 students from around the world formed teams to produce news packages and compete for three reporting awards. We are proud to share that our student Zheng Jianyu and his team earned a Merit Award, while Tan Haiyan, Xiang Lizhi, and Mahzaib Abbasi won prizes in the 60-second individual video challenge.

Students described the experience as highly valuable—not only for strengthening their interviewing and reporting skills, but also for expanding their global perspectives and networks through cross-cultural exchange. Beyond the classroom, participants explored local attractions and immersed themselves in Abu Dhabi’s vibrant culture.
