Conference on Cantonese Pop Music

A conference, “Nostalgia of Diaspora Music: Development of Cantonese Pop Music in Southeast Asia,” organized by the JCM department, took place on November 10th and 11th, 2023, at Lecture Hall 5 of Hong Kong Chu Hai College. The conference aimed to explore and discuss the development of Cantonese pop music in Southeast Asia and among diaspora Chinese communities, as well as to re-examine the cultural significance of Cantonese pop in Chinese-speaking regions.

 

The invited speakers for the conference included Prof. CHU Yiu Wai Stephen from The University of Hong Kong, Prof. FUNG, Anthony Y. H. from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. YAN Feng from Fudan University, Prof. CHUNG She-fong and Prof. HUANG Chun-ming from the College of Communication at Chengchi University, Prof. LIEW Kai-Khiun from Hong Kong Metropolitan University, Prof. JIAN Miao-ju from Chung Cheng University, Prof. LEI Chin-pang from the University of Macau, Dr. CHEN Zhiwei, a Film and Media PhD from the University of Stirling in the UK, and Prof. Jeroen de Kloet from the University of Amsterdam. Additionally, documentary director ZHOU Yeung Ming was invited to screen her work featuring “Zhou Lan-Ping: His Life and Music.”
